20 steps

20 Steps

The scope of this project was to film 20 steps with different shots and such.

For my project we decided that wasn't good enough so instead we filmed the steps of life. This video is the journey of several different people from the time they are young to the time they fall in love and graduate and start their careers.

I used some of my brothers friends and some of my friends to show getting your first car and falling in love. I also used the kids I babysit to be the young kids growing up.

This project took a very different turn in our view of how it should be done than the project originally called for. But in the end it turned out to be a pretty good story.

Why movies make people cry

Why movies make people cry

Movies are a medium of actors on a fake set pretending to feel someone. Yet movies have the power to make people cry. Whether those tears are from happiness, sadness, or even fear the tears always find a way.

The goal of an actor is to be so good at their job that you actually believe what they are saying and doing. You believe them so much and can become so attached to the character and his or her story that you start to feel what they are feeling.

You put yourself in their position when you get attached to them and their emotions and the things that happen to them begin to relate to your own life.

When a character has you completely hooked on the story, that is when you ill cry for them.
You become so consumed with the relationship between characters that the loss of one is a loss for you as well. You cry because you lose them too because you will never see them again.

Within the story you get to know these characters and you as well begin to have a relationship with them.

Hitchcock's Rule

Hitchcock's Rule

Hitchcock's rule is that the size of any object in your frame should be proportional to its importance to the story at that moment.
It is important to know your story to be able to identify what is the most important for a particular shot.
Typically a close up shot should be used when the detail is most important to the story at that moment.
Medium shots should be used when it is necessary to show the relationship between two objects.

The use of wide shots shows the setting of the story or the environment around the subject and how it relates to the story.

Everything in the frame should be important to the story. You must figure out how important the object is and what you are trying to say with the shot in order to figure out which shot to use.

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Recently I watched Breakfast at Tiffany's because it was on Netflix and I was bored. I had heard how amazing this classic movie was, so I figured I would give it a chance.

When the movie started it seemed to take forever for the actual movie to start. It seemed to just be random shots of New York.

But when the movie actually started I was so pleased with he movie. It seemed a bit odd to me when Audrey Hepburn's characters' ex-husband showed up. But as it progressed I understood how that represented who she didn't want to be and how she had left that life completely.

I love what Cat represents in the movie and how she explains that he isn't going to get a name because she is afraid of commitment of any kind.

The whole movie represents the party life of a young New York person and how they only seem to be looking out for themselves. When Holly finally realizes that she is in love with Paul and stops calling him Fred, it shows all of these emotions that she has been trying to get rid of for so long.

I don't understand why it is called Breakfast at Tiffany's because Tiffany's is a jewelry store and they never eat there so it doesn't make sense.

Anyways, this classic is a new favorite of mine for its kind of crazy plot line that shows viewers that if you let it love will find its way to you and can complete all of your needs in life.

MLK video

Martim Luther King Jr.

This video was filmed over one weekend.

We started by thinking about all of the things that have love and make people happy. We created a list of these things and then made a script to have as a voiceover to connect the shots.

We got the idea to use candles and lights to show the illumination of love. We used a family to show the feelings you feel when you come home to your family and how family and love complete a person and make them happy.

This video shows how love illuminates life by expressing the way people feel toward certain people and things. Everyday things that cause love and joy in our lives.

Why scary movies aren't scary anymore

Todays horror movies are getting less and less scary. This is happening because the movies are lazy, and they don't lead up to anything because they go for the small scares not the big ones.

Most horror movies try to scare you with a jump scare or a loud noise. But by doing this it "trains" the viewer to only expect those loud noises and to associate the "fear" with a loud noise or a false scare and forget what true terror feels like.

Horror movies that are successful in the fear factor find things that emotionally connect viewers. For example when movies show the monster or ghost by the baby and the mother freaks out, you tend to freak out to because a baby stands for innocence and they disrupted that.

Another factor to the success of horror movies is the trailers. The producer has no say over the trailer so it can make or break a movie.

Virtual Reality

http://nofilmschool.com/2015/09/virtual-reality-here-netflix-hulu-100-titles-from-fox

This article from no film school talks about the recent interest companies are having in virtual reality.

Fox, Netflix, and Hulu have all recently released that they are getting very serious about using Oculus Virtual Reality Headsets and Samsung Gear VR headset to transform movies. It is being called a "virtual reality cinema".

This new market of virtual reality is just starting to be explored. This market creates a new way to experience movies in a 3D.

All of these companies will be producing an individual app for the Oculus Headset. The amount of shows available on the app are still very limited because of how new this market is.

When the shows kick off they will not be available in HD, only standard definition.

Home Sweet Home

Home Sweet Home

The scope of this project was to create a video with all of the things we love about Olathe Northwest.

We first started by brainstorming ideas and the theme of our video. We story boarded and then went out to film people in different grades talk about their favorite things about ONW. We got lots of B roll shots of the school and the people in it.

While doing this I learned how to collaborate my ideas with the other people in my group. I also learned how to conduct an interview with people and get good sounds bytes from them.

This project was my first time using the 60D cameras so I had to learn how to use them and how to correctly focus and figure out what to focus on.

If i could do something different I would make sure the lighting is better before i shoot.

I would conduct the interviews the same because I got really good sound bytes.

I will use my new knowledge of different types of cameras in further projects.

Benched

Benched

https://youtu.be/St4_OEzMjt0

The last project of my sophomore year was a short film under 3 minutes. We had 4 weeks to do this. We were challenged to use a hat, water bottle, intentional source of life, and the phrase 'light out' in our film.

The process for this project started with us brainstorming ideas for a plot. We came up with the idea for this film fairly quickly. Once we came up with the idea for Benched and figured out how the story would go, we began to story board and create a shot list. We then created a script and picked actors. We used people in our group as the actors. After we finished the shot list, production schedule, and the storyboard, we began filming.

We filmed most of this film outside because this is a film about softball. Filming outside was difficult because the weather and wind played a big factor. It took us about two weeks to film.

Another difficulty we had was getting shots that made it look like girl was getting hit with a bat without actually getting hit. To solve this problem we used the sun to create a shadow so that Sarah could swing the bat over the top of Katie's head and it looks like she hits her. The sun and the shadows make it so when watching it you have no depth perception therefore, allows us to make the bat scene.

From this project I learned how to edit the audio to make wind and other outside noises not as loud. I also learned how to handle being in a group with so many people. This was difficult because we had to take in account everyones ideas.

If I could do something different I would have given everyone microphones so the audio wouldn't be as bad. I would keep the plot the same I would just make sure we got all the shots we needed.

To enhance my next project I will take the ability to work with so many people in a short amount of time to get the work done.

This was a very fun project because I got to work with some of my close friends and I was very proud of the way we all worked together to get this project done in time.

Final- Soccer box

Soccer Box

When trying to come up with a product idea Katie and I looked to the things we both love-sports. We came up with the idea to make a box that can be transformed into a goal to use when playing with the product, which is a small soccer ball.

The first step in making our product was creating it in illustrator. Katie and I had really good teamwork because we divided the work evenly. I made the box and Katie made the lid.

The difficulties we had this project were that at first we couldn't find a pattern that make the box look like a goal. When we test printed the mini version of our product we discovered that we put the instructions upside down so we had to fix that.

Our team chemistry was really good for this project because Katie and I are close friends and we signed a team contract to ensure we both do our part to make sure our product turned out as great as we could make it.

My package Design

For this project I made a package design for a product I invented. The product I chose was a supplement that hydrates you so you don't have to drink water. The first thing I did was to design the shape of the box. I them made the die line and bleed layers. I created a logo for the product and used the 3D shape tool to make a 3D revolve of the product I made.

The 3D revolve was actually one of the easiest parts of this project. I enjoyed making them and am glad I have gained that experience.

This is my template. This was the hardest part of this project because my tutorial video would never load and so I had to start over a lot of times. Eventually, I figured out how to make the tutorial work and I completed the template.
This is my label. I came up wight the logo because I saw something on Pinterest that inspired me. To find the proper text font I did a lot of searching by using lots of different fonts to find the perfect one.

eMagine

eMagine

I attended eMagine a few weeks ago. It was a great experience to see so many students from so many schools. It was fun to see all the different entries and winners. I will try to enter my own project next year. It was a fun social event and a great way to spend my saturday night!

My 10 things

My 10 things

The assignment was to create a poster that displayed my 10 favorite things. During this lesson I learned a lot about text padding and how to manage white space. This project made me think about the most important things in my life. I also learned how to add contrast to the lest by making it different colors and sizes and fonts.

Most of the ideas I got for the layout and the things I chose came from the 10 things interview magazine does. This magazine has people pick their favorite things or the things they can't like without. They mostly interview famous people. I tried to be as specific as I could when choosing items. By doing this I could then expand on the item by explaining why I chose it and what extends on to it. For example, I put a picture of Sweet and Sour chicken so that when I explained it I could say that its from my favorite restaurant.

Frozen movie poster

Type

The style of type I chose is called Harry Potter. I liked how edgy this style was and how it goes along with the ice theme of the movie. I put a drop shadow on the text to give the effect that it was icy.

Mountains

The mountains I made are called swiss mountains. I found the idea off of a Titanic movie poster that used this simple design to make a design that was very creative. The design is simply just triangles of different colors layered on top of each other.

Snow

The now in the background was created from a tutorial i found on snowy effects. I just simply used the blur tool and the shape tool to make a snowy effect. The big snowflake in the middle was made by layering different custom shapes together and adding transparent parts in the middle. I also added effects like shadows and inner glow.

Saul Bass

My poster is similar to a Saul bass style of poster because it uses 2-3 colors and black and white. My poster also has a simple design of mountains and custom font. My poster is different than the Saul Bass style because mine is much more complex in the overall design of the poster. The snowflake has more detail than a normal Saul Bass poster would. The Jaws poster is an example of a Saul Bass poster.

Working with type

I followed the tutorial and then went back and did my own type design. I typed my name then used the create outlines tool to stretch and manipulate each individual letter.
